Lab Panel

Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP)

The BMP is a streamlined version of the CMP that focuses on glucose, electrolytes, and kidney function. It contains 8 tests that provide essential information about your metabolic status without the liver function markers. The BMP is frequently used in emergency and hospital settings for rapid metabolic assessment.

What This Panel Screens For

Blood sugar abnormalities (hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia), kidney dysfunction, electrolyte imbalances that can affect heart rhythm and muscle function, dehydration, and acid-base disorders. It is the go-to panel for monitoring patients on diuretics, blood pressure medications, or IV fluids.

Biomarkers Included

When To Get This Panel

Routinely ordered during hospital admissions, emergency visits, and pre-operative evaluations. In outpatient settings, it is appropriate for monitoring kidney function in patients taking blood pressure medications, diuretics, or diabetes drugs. Also useful for quick metabolic check-ups between full CMP panels.

Recommended Frequency

As needed based on clinical context. For patients on diuretics or ACE inhibitors, every 3-6 months. In hospital settings, it may be drawn daily or even multiple times per day.

How GATOR Normalizes Across Lab Vendors

GATOR standardizes BMP results across lab vendors so that electrolyte and kidney function trends stay consistent. Since the BMP is a subset of the CMP, GATOR automatically links BMP and CMP results into a unified timeline, preventing duplicate entries when both panels are ordered on the same date.
