Sodium
Sodium is the primary extracellular electrolyte, essential for fluid balance, nerve impulse transmission, and muscle contraction. Blood sodium is tightly regulated by the kidneys and ADH (antidiuretic hormone).
High sodium (hypernatremia) usually indicates dehydration. Low sodium (hyponatremia) can result from overhydration, SIADH, heart failure, or certain medications.
