Clinical Significance
Calcium and phosphorus are tightly regulated by PTH and vitamin D in a reciprocal relationship. Disruption of this ratio signals parathyroid dysfunction, vitamin D deficiency, or chronic kidney disease. A calcium-phosphorus product above 55 mg²/dL² is associated with vascular calcification risk.
What To Do
If ratio is low (high phosphorus): reduce dietary phosphorus (processed foods, sodas), check renal function and PTH. If ratio is high (low phosphorus): evaluate for hyperparathyroidism, check vitamin D status. Ensure adequate but not excessive vitamin D supplementation.
