Phosphorus
Phosphorus is essential for bone mineralization, energy metabolism (ATP), DNA/RNA synthesis, and acid-base balance. It works inversely with calcium — high phosphorus often means low calcium and vice versa.
Kidney disease is the most common cause of high phosphorus. Low phosphorus can result from malnutrition, vitamin D deficiency, or refeeding syndrome.
