Magnesium
Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions including energy production, protein synthesis, muscle contraction, nerve function, and blood glucose regulation.
Subclinical magnesium deficiency is widespread (up to 50% of US population) because serum magnesium poorly reflects total body stores — only 1% of magnesium is in blood. RBC magnesium is a better marker but rarely tested.
Low magnesium is associated with insomnia, muscle cramps, anxiety, migraines, insulin resistance, and cardiac arrhythmias.
