Clinical Significance
The Na/K ratio reflects the interplay between dietary sodium, potassium intake, aldosterone activity, and renal regulation. WHO recommends a urinary Na/K ratio below 1.0 (molar) for cardiovascular protection. Serum ratios outside 28โ34 may indicate adrenal insufficiency, Cushing syndrome, or renal tubular dysfunction.
What To Do
If high (excess sodium relative to potassium): increase potassium-rich foods (bananas, leafy greens, avocados), reduce sodium. If low: evaluate for Addison disease or aldosterone deficiency. Check adrenal function with cortisol and ACTH if persistently abnormal.
