Albumin/Globulin Ratio
Formula
Albumin / GlobulinWhat It Reveals
Liver synthetic function and immune activation status.
Interpretation Ranges
Optimal
1.1โ2.5
Normal hepatic synthesis and immune balance
Borderline
0.8โ1.1
Possible liver dysfunction or chronic inflammation
High Risk
< 0.8
Significant liver impairment, chronic infection, or myeloma risk
Clinical Significance
Albumin is produced exclusively by the liver and reflects synthetic capacity, while globulins rise with immune activation, chronic infection, or malignancy. A low A/G ratio can be an early indicator of cirrhosis, autoimmune disease, or multiple myeloma before overt symptoms appear.
What To Do
If low: evaluate for chronic liver disease (check liver panel, imaging). Rule out chronic infections and autoimmune conditions. Ensure adequate protein intake. If very low, screen for monoclonal gammopathy with SPEP.
