RBC Count (Red Blood Cells)

Red blood cells (erythrocytes) carry oxygen from the lungs to tissues and return carbon dioxide for exhalation. RBC count is part of the complete blood count (CBC).

Low RBC (anemia) can result from blood loss, nutritional deficiency (iron, B12, folate), bone marrow disorders, or chronic disease. High RBC (polycythemia) can result from chronic hypoxia, dehydration, or myeloproliferative disorders.

What It Measures

Number of red blood cells per microliter of blood.
