LDL/HDL Ratio

Formula

LDL-C / HDL-C

What It Reveals

Atherogenic risk balance between harmful and protective cholesterol fractions.

Interpretation Ranges

Optimal

< 2.0

Favorable cholesterol balance โ€” low atherogenic risk

Borderline

2.0โ€“3.5

Moderate risk โ€” lifestyle optimization recommended

High Risk

> 3.5

Elevated atherogenic risk โ€” intervention warranted

Clinical Significance

The LDL/HDL ratio captures the interplay between atherogenic LDL particles and protective HDL-mediated reverse cholesterol transport. A ratio above 3.5 is associated with a 2โ€“3 fold increase in coronary artery disease risk, independent of total cholesterol.

What To Do

Lower LDL through dietary fiber, plant sterols, and statins if indicated. Raise HDL with regular aerobic exercise, moderate alcohol, and omega-3 fatty acids. Recheck after 3 months of intervention.
